Herne, Dorneburger Park

A playground shaped by local residents’ wishes

Over the past two years, the 6-hectare Dorneburger Park in Herne’s Eickel district has been redesigned. The overall concept was strongly influenced by a community participation process led by local residents. When shaping the play area, the ideas of children and young people were taken into account in particular.

The new playground brings every wish to life: climbing, sliding, swinging, seesawing, spinning, balancing, and playing with sand and water. The different play options cater for all user groups and create space for intergenerational play.

Because the park’s name recalls the former moated castle Haus Dorneburg – which once stood in the same district until it was destroyed in the Second World War – the ‘castle’ theme was woven into several pieces of equipment. The large play structure, for example, is designed like a moated castle with a long drawbridge, while the spring-mounted ‘Galloper’ animals invite children to a knightly tournament. The water play area also echoes a castle moat, complete with a weir.

On the Nibelungenland climbing and balancing course, children can put their skills to the test. The two skewed, twisted climbing nets are a particular challenge.

For those after a bit more speed, there’s a Holländerscheibe (spinning disc), plus a bird’s nest swing and a double swing to soar through the air.

The designers didn’t forget the very youngest, either: for them, the Hummel playhouse is ready and waiting to be conquered.
