Gießen’s Schiffenberg has gained a new, one-of-a-kind playground. Near the barbecue hut, right on the edge of the Schiffenberg woodland, an elaborately designed play combination, a swing and seating – all themed around a “bird’s nest” – now blend harmoniously into the site across two levels.
The heart of this nature-inspired playground is the large play combination spanning both levels. Via a rope-and-net bridge, a four-metre suspension bridge and a slalom route, visitors move from the upper level by the barbecue hut down to the lower section.
This lower section includes two birdhouses set high up, several climbing boulders, timber platforms, a balance-mikado area and many different balancing crossings between the elements. Three overhead “climbing palms” at different heights evoke storks’ nests. A nest with a net surface for resting and a wobble nest also form part of the equipment.
In keeping with the theme, two small benches shaped like birds’ feet sit next to the barbecue hut for younger children. There is also a double swing made of robinia, allowing up to three people to swing together.
